Mishima

In this process we are able to create fine lines and a more controlled drawing, as it is scratched with a needle instead of a brush.

This process has to be done on dry clay .

Basically, if we apply wax to a surface it will repel any paint that is put on top of it. So, if we apply wax and let it dry , we can then use a needle or dry tip to scratch a design , removing the wax when scratching these lines. If we then apply paint or underglaze with a fine brush , it will be very easy for the paint to remain contained in the line that was scratched.

Before applying the wax, we can paint the clay, with engobes (when it was wetter, of course) or underglazes. It may also be useful to mark the design on the surface before painting, using a regular graphite pencil.

There are other variants of this technique, as always.
